Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was a Baptist minister and leader of the American civil rights movement. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia to a middle-class family and quickly became drawn to the teachings of non-violent civil disobedience. Martin Luther King Jr. is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in American history.

Education & Early Life

King was born into a family of educators, with both his father and grandfather serving as Baptist pastors. He excelled in school and entered Morehouse College at the age of 15. After earning a degree in sociology, he continued his studies at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania and earned a doctorate in systematic theology.

The Civil Rights Movement

King became a prominent leader of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s and is most known for his role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, which helped end racial segregation on public transportation. He then founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, which became the primary vehicle for his civil rights activism.

King was instrumental in organizing the March on Washington in August 1963, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work in promoting racial equality through nonviolent civil disobedience.

Assassination & Legacy

On April 4, 1968, King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. His death sparked riots in many cities across the United States. He is remembered for his peaceful, nonviolent approach to activism, as well as his dedication to racial equality and justice for all. His legacy continues to inspire people around the world to fight for social change and equality.
